The NASCAR world is mourning the loss of Cale Yarborough.  Yarborough died today at age 84 after a lengthy illness.

He first attempted to qualify for the Southern 500 as a teenager by lying about his age, but he was found out and thrown out by NASCAR.

He won the Daytona 500 four times, the Southern 500 five times and he became the first NASCAR driver to win three consecutive championships.

Yarborough ranks sixth on the all-time NASCAR wins list and was part of the third class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame despite cutting back his racing schedule in the prime of his career.

Seven-time NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson called Yarborough his "childhood hero."
