City Note
Yesterday marked a heartbreaking day for the City of Florence, Florence County, and their families and friends. On Wednesday, October 3, 2018, three Florence County deputies and four City of Florence officers were involved in an active shooter situation outside of the City limits in Vintage Place subdivision, located off Hoffmeyer Rd.
Responding to a request for assistance, City police officers were acting as mutual aid support for the Florence County Sheriff’s office following a shooting taking place at a residence involving those deputies, who were attempting to execute a warrant.
One of the responding City of Florence police officers was killed in the line of duty, and three others were wounded. Three Sheriff’s deputies were also wounded.
The deceased officer is Sgt. Terrence Carraway, a 30 year veteran of the City of Florence police department. Two of the City of Florence police officers have been treated at local hospitals and released. One remains hospitalized.
The incident occurred outside the city limits, therefore the Florence County Sheriff’s Office has taken the lead in the investigation.
Currently, community-wide vigils are being planned. We will announce the times and locations of those vigils as soon as we are able.
If parties are interested in making donations to the families of the injured or deceased officers, contributions are currently being accepted at any First Citizens Bank location in the Pee Dee Region. Tax deductible donations should be made payable to the City of Florence Police Benevolence Fund. Online contributions will be accepted later today.
